Going Back in Time to find Toys that are Educational & Environmentally Friendly

July 29, 2014 @ 7:00 pm

“Going Back in Time to find Toys that are Educational & Environmentally Friendly”

Did you know the Slinky is a Pennsylvania toy? “Bicycle Bob” Swaim is ready to tells us the story! A retired high school math teacher, Bob is a famed collector of “human-powered vehicles” (you and I might call them exotic bicycles, really exotic) and other environmental-friendly toys.

At our July meeting, Bob will both entertain and inform with demos and talk about human-powered vehicles and other classic multigenerational toys, including the Slinky and juggling. Bob claims to know more about the Slinky than anyone else in Lehigh or Berks counties, woo hoo!! He’ll address health, history, engineering, diversity, team work, and volunteering for people of all ages.

Bob’s collection of more than 200 human-powered vehicles includes bicycles built for two, three and more (!), sideways bikes, high-wheelers (with 42” wheels), a dicycle (where rider swings between two 84” wheels) and a new no-hands recumbent! His most celebrated HPV is a four-wheeled, seven-seat “conference bike” where everyone pedals (in a circle)—truly a work of art. Weather permitting, he’ll bring along many of these bikes for our up close personal inspection and maybe an opportunity to take a spin, along with six of your best or newest friends!

For more Bicycle Bob stories and pictures, see Bob Swaim’s bicycles aren’t your average Schwinns, Bob the Bikeman, or The Cycle of Life. Search around and you’ll find even more!

Hope you can join us, and bring the kids too. Bob’s shows are entertaining and educational. After the meeting, we hope you’ll plan to stick around to chat and check out the bikes and toys. Light snacks will be served. Hope to see you there!

Free DVD with MAREA membership  While supplies last, all new and renewing MAREA members will receive a free copy of “Saving Sunshine, Keeping the Lights on with Batteries and Solar Power,” the 30-minute DVD produced by MAREA this year with funding from the Berks Community Foundation and distributed by Bullfrog Films. It’s terrific film, offering an interesting and easily understood explanation of the electricity grid and distribution generation, especially the role of batteries with solar. MAREA is a 501(c)3 non-profit. Donations and memberships are how we keep the lights on. You can join at the meeting or anytime online. Thanks for your help.
