MAREA’s 2nd Annual Open Mic Night!

October 25, 2016 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Open Mic Night! A new annual MAREA tradition

Every month our speakers tell us how impressed they are by the MAREA audience questions—smart, hard and lots of them! (We always say with a smile, we tried to warn you…) Clearly in our ranks we have loads of experience, knowledge and enthusiasm on a variety of topics. Plus, it’s fun to hear from our own friends and neighbors about personal experience of shared interest.

For our October meeting, we invited YOU to take the mic, front and center! We asked for topics related to renewable energy and/or sustainability, based on personal experience, of interest and use to MAREA audience members, and not commercial. Thanks for all the great responses!

We settled on these topics, lasting 10-15 minutes each plus a few questions. Here’s the lineup:

MAREA Announcements—updates and news you can use!

Solar Water Pumping with the Grundfos SQFlex–An overview of PV-powered water pumping with the SQFlex submersible pumps, including design, cost and operational considerations for the farm–the sustainable bond of food, energy and water. –Bill Hennessy

Sealing the Rim Joist– Addressing this often overlooked issue can cure multiple ailments that may be jeopardizing your home’s well-being. Learn about the critical concerns and a meditative weekend project.–Phil Jones

Biogas–100s of millions of folk around the world are working toward the development and use of smaller-scale biogas systems, “the domestication of dragons!” Bob will use pictures from nearby Dickinson College Farm to show us some smaller-scale, integrated greenhouse-digester ideas–Bob Hamburg

EV Tech Expo–The Electric & Hybrid Vehicle Technology Expo was held in Michican last month. John attended and will share his experience and pictures and tell us what he learned about technical areas up-and-coning with the EV manufacturers–John McVicker

What fun! This is sure to be an interesting and lively meeting. And, it’s the last MAREA meeting for 2016. Hope you can join us!

The meeting is Tuesday, October 25 at 7:00 at TEKPark (9999 Hamilton Boulevard, Breinigsville, PA 18031, between Kutztown and Allentown). Meetings are free and open to the public. After the meeting, please plan to stick around and chat with friends old and new. Light snacks will be served. Hope to see you there!

Free DVD with MAREA membership (https://www.themarea.org/join.shtml) While supplies last, all new and renewing MAREA members will receive a free copy of “Saving Sunshine, Keeping the Lights on with Batteries and Solar Power,” the 30-minute DVD produced by MAREA this year with funding from the Berks Community Foundation and distributed by Bullfrog Films. It’s terrific film, offering an interesting and easily understood explanation of the electricity grid and distribution generation, especially the role of batteries with solar. MAREA is a 501(c)3 non-profit. Donations and memberships are how we keep the lights on. You can join at the meeting or anytime online (https://www.themarea.org/join.shtml). Thanks for your help.
