MAREA’s First Open Mic Night! Call for Participants

October 27, 2015 @ 7:00 pm

Open Mic Night—a MAREA First!

Every month our speakers tell us how impressed they are by the MAREA audience questions—smart, hard and lots of them! (We always say with a smile, we tried to warn you…) Clearly in our ranks we have loads of experience, knowledge and enthusiasm on a variety of topics. Plus, it’s fun to hear from our own friends and neighbors about personal experience of shared interest. (For those of you who attended our August car show, you’ll know just what we mean. Great fun, and very informative, to hear from the car owners themselves!)

For our October meeting, we invited YOU to take the mic, front and center! We asked for topics related to renewable energy and/or sustainability, based on personal experience, of interest and use to MAREA audience members, and not commercial. Thanks for all the great responses!

We settled on six topics, lasting about 10 minutes each plus a few questions. Here’s the lineup:

MAREA Announcements—updates, ongoing activities and other news you can use!

Hempcrete—a carbon friendly and sustainable building option, Ben Bowers

Virtual Net Metering—significance for rural customers and PPL’s “change of heart” related to “non-generational load” in personal case, Larry Moyer

Heat Pump Water Heaters–a way to save 2/3 of the energy from the second largest electric energy consumer in your home (Kurt also found it could help dehumidify his workshop), Kurt Reinhart

Passive Solar Features & Retrofit Possibilities, Marie North, passive home owner and Certified Sustainable Building Adviser

Bathroom Exhaust fans – reduce energy use by 90% and cut through that thick shower fog (while preventing mold and protecting insulation), Phil Jones

What fun! This is sure to be an interesting and lively meeting. And, it’s the last MAREA meeting for 2015. Hope you can join us!

The meeting is Tuesday, October 27 at 7:00 at TEKPark (9999 Hamilton Boulevard, Breinigsville, PA 18031, between Kutztown and Allentown). Meetings are free and open to the public. After the meeting, please plan to stick around and chat with friends old and new. Light snacks will be served. Hope to see you there!

For questions, contact Vera Cole, [masked].

Free DVD with MAREA membership  While supplies last, all new and renewing MAREA members will receive a free copy of “Saving Sunshine, Keeping the Lights on with Batteries and Solar Power,” the 30-minute DVD produced by MAREA this year with funding from the Berks Community Foundation and distributed by Bullfrog Films. It’s terrific film, offering an interesting and easily understood explanation of the electricity grid and distribution generation, especially the role of batteries with solar. MAREA is a 501(c)3 non-profit. Donations and memberships are how we keep the lights on. You can join at the meeting or anytime online. Thanks for your help.
