Passive Design Plugs into Solar on Green Roofs in Philly

October 28, 2025 @ 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm

Residential Solar is getting creative in Philadelphia. Join Ron Celentano as he hosts a virtual tour of four Passive House designed projects that incorporated Solar PV along with green (vegetative) roofs to achieve ultra-high energy efficiency, low environmental impact and ultra-low external energy consumption. Pennsylvania’s longest running and most deeply-embedded Solar-advocate will preface the virtual tour with an update on Solar PV installations and pending legislation in Pennsylvania. Let’s get aspirational in October!

Solar panels over vegetative roof of a building designed to Passive House criteria in Philadelphia
Raising the solar array allowed the panels to extend to the full building length and width, increasing power generation and enabling space for a vegetative roof. The vegetative roof has a cooling effect on the building and also diverts storm water discharge.

Ron Celentano has been working in the solar energy field for 50 years, with nearly 30 years focused on solar PV. He is currently the principal with Celentano Energy Services (CES). His experience covers technical and policy related fields; system design; installation; commissioning; testing; performance monitoring; project oversight; expert witness regarding technical assessments of PV systems and products; installer/code-official training; curriculum development; and rebate program administration. He has been involved with helping shape most of Pennsylvania’s state laws and regulations regarding solar energy for nearly three decades, including net metering, interconnection, PA’s solar share requirement, closing state borders and many other policy related issues. He is President of Pennsylvania Solar & Storage Industries Assoc. (PASSIA) and V.P. of Mid-Atlantic Solar & Storage Industries Assoc. (MSSIA) for Pennsylvania. He is also the Technical Director of the Philadelphia Solar Energy Assoc. (PSEA). Ron holds a BS in Physics and MS in the field of Mechanical Engineering.
