Speaker: Charles Fishman, author of “The Big Thirst”

January 31, 2017 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

The Mixing of Electricity and Water

Charles Fishman, author

Charles Fishman, author of “The Big Thirst (The Secret Life and Turbulent Future of Water) (http://www.thebigthirst.com/the-book/)” will join us online (on the big screen) from his office in Virginia to talk about water, especially as it relates to electricity. He writes, “Water is the secret ingredient of our fuel-hungry society. The electricity you use at home each day requires 250 gallons of water per person, not just more than the actual water you use at home in the kitchen and the bathroom but two-and-half times more.” This book was the topic of MAREA’s January book discussion, spawning lively conversation (and well attended). It’s a good read, available in Kindle and paperback (library too!).

In addition to water’s role in electricity generation, Mr. Fishman draws clear connections with the scale and energy requirements for pumping, moving and treating water. His well-researched water scenarios describe challenges and opportunities (taken and missed) in a variety of cultural contexts. His well-honed perspectives on something as “common” as water are often unexpected and thought provoking. A clear and engaging speaker, he looks forward to taking questions from the audience in what promises to be a very interesting talk.

Charles Fishman is a long-time staffer and contributor at Fast Company magazine and a former reporter and editor the Washington Post. He has received UCLA’s Gerald Loeb Award, “the most prestigious award in business journalism,” three times. His previous book, The Wal-Mart Effect was a New York Times bestseller and named a “book of the year” by The Economist, for its depiction of Wal-Mart’s impact on the economy. We are delighted to have him join us! Hope you can too.

The meeting is Tuesday, January 31, at 7:00 at TEKPark (9999 Hamilton Boulevard, Breinigsville, PA 18031, between Kutztown and Allentown). Meetings are free and open to the public. After the meeting, please plan to stick around and chat with friends old and new. Light snacks will be served. Hope to see you there!

Need a gift…but don’t want to buy stuff?

If you’d like to make a donation to MAREA or buy someone a membership as a gift, let us know and we’ll handle the acknowledgement thoughtfully, by email or paper mail, with your input. Drop us a note at [masked] . And remember, all new memberships get a free copy of the DVD, “Saving Sunshine (https://themarea.org/saving-sunshine.shtml)”!

Free DVD with MAREA membership (https://themarea.org/join.shtml) While supplies last, all new and renewing MAREA members will receive a free copy of “Saving Sunshine, Keeping the Lights on with Batteries and Solar Power,” the 30-minute DVD produced by MAREA this year with funding from the Berks Community Foundation and distributed by Bullfrog Films. It’s terrific film, offering an interesting and easily understood explanation of the electricity grid and distribution generation, especially the role of batteries with solar. MAREA is a 501(c)3 non-profit. Donations and memberships are how we keep the lights on. You can join at the meeting or anytime online (https://themarea.org/join.shtml). Thanks for your help.
